Results

The result is an EU-wide usable model for social space and needs-oriented youth work outside of formal education, tailored to young people with fewer opportunities. The model illustrates, which needs disadvantaged young people have and what methods are effective to reach them, what competences youth work personnel shall have, what can be done to activate stakeholders in the district and what international cooperation can do, how conducive framework conditions look like and how they can be influenced.

Strategy Paper on social space orientated youth work with disadvantaged groups and Capacity Building Guide for youth work institutions

The Strategy Paper presents the concept of social space orientation of youth work with disadvantaged groups, illustrates the needs of this target group and the requirements for learning and participation models, explains framework conditions, regulatory aspects, EU policies and action plans in the field of youth work, and gives advice on how to connect practice with science and politics.
The Capacity Building Guide provides the institutions that want to work with the concept a blueprint for their institutional development (with recommendations regarding organisation structure, resources and tools, quality assurance & validation, access to stakeholders in the social space, communication and networking, internationalisation etc.).

Three case studies on social space-oriented youth work with disadvantaged groups

  • Case Study 1: „Reaching out to all young people” – inclusion in social space-oriented youth work with disadvantaged groups (This model focuses on working with informal groups of disabled young people and their families in alternative counselling centres of civil society organisations).
  • Case Study 2: „Global Citizenship: Straddling levels from global to local” (This model is about dealing with sustainability topics relevant for the concrete living environment of NEETs, using a day-care facility structure)
  • Case Study 3: „The virtual world” – Empowerment of disadvantaged young people through participation offers in game coding (Upon the example of a troubled neighbourhood, this model shows how digital technologies can be used to strengthen participation of youth from difficult social backgrounds and how the interaction of the real and virtual worlds can constitute new social spaces).

This is intended to stimulate the discussion process about the future of youth policy and youth work, about how disadvantages are to be reduced and about the role of the various stakeholders in this process.)
